My favourite post from the entire thread was made by Cannibal.
I’ve always been frightened by Jupiter, and most big ass space things as well. It’s a weird lovecraftian thing I suppose. I can get freaked out by clouds as well if I think about it. Something the size of mountains that moves faster than a human can run, that form and shift all day long, there’s just something immense and scary about it.
and when I think about Jupiter…. a planet massively larger than our own planet, with no stable solid ground til you get near the very core. Surrounding by millions of Earth sized gobs of poisonous gas, that are in constant motion. Just thinking of the red spot. A place 3 times the size of our own planet that Homo Sapiens have had a culture on for less than 80,000 years. There’s a place, not that far away, that you could get to in a matter of years, there’s a place, where a storm has been constantly churning, 3 times larger than our planet, for much longer than we’ve even been a coherent civilization…
something about that just isn’t right, and makes you not want to fuck with nature. That something so terrible exists, that has already lived longer than humans will ever hope to endure.
Edit: So, his facts are a little off. He still makes a great point though. As much as I hate to throw around cliches, it put things in perspective.
